Position
Summary:
The Director of Communications manages the flow of communication and information between the company and the public.
A few of the main duties of this position include managing the communications departments and acting as the gatekeeper to organization approved spokespeople.
This position works to ensure the organization maintains a positive image by overseeing and approving any company information or announcements before they're released to the public.
Communications Directors view any promotional or marketing materials to ensure they represent a positive company image before being published.
A Director of Communications is responsible for developing effective messaging and communication strategies.
They must create or oversee the creation of promotional and informative materials the company will send to the public.
They'll work with all forms of media, including press releases and digital campaigns, print materials, social media, audio, video, and more.
Supervisory
Responsibilities:
Trains supervisory and management staff in the department.
Manage subordinate members of the department.
Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
Essential Functions:
Promote and display a positive company image at all times.
Always reflect positively on the company.
Remain calm under pressure and not be inclined to panic during stressful situations.
Develop company response plans for various potential scenarios.
Organize table-top exercise, training sessions, and otherwise ensure key OBR personnel are properly trained for external communications.
Act and communicate in a professional manner at all times.
Must be a confident and effective public speaker.
Respond to crises or challenging situations quickly and professionally.
Attend and participate in speaking engagements.
Hosting special events.
Make sure all company materials have consistent and positive messaging and branding.
Conduct quality control on all communications.
Manage a team of communications staff.
Develop relationships with media outlets and other companies.
Establish positive and meaningful networks with media outlets and media industry professionals.
Working on and deliver messages through a variety of platforms, including but not limited to print, tv, streaming, online, social media, video, audio, radio, traditional, non-traditional, and must be willing to learn new platforms introduced to the marketplace.
Directs and implements the organizations advertising and promotional activities.
Analyzes target market information to identify and recommend effective marketing approaches.
Identifies new market segments that will benefit from company products.
Prepares effective advertising campaigns based on market research.
Develops innovative strategies to attract supporters, donors, sponsors, volunteers, charitable beneficiaries, to the company's brand through various web-based marketing programs and search engine optimization (SEO) techniques.
Identifies appropriate social media platforms and other web-based tools to use in the promotion of each, including but not limited to, programs, deployments, events, products or services Oversees the implementation of online marketing plans; compiles and analyzes data to measure the effectiveness of such plans.
Identifies and recommends improvements and modifications to existing communications activities and additional or new marketing strategies and opportunities.
Collaborates with and coordinates communication among OBR departments to complete projects.
Maintains current knowledge of online marketing opportunities and trends, web analytics, and SEO techniques.
Forecasts, drafts, implements, and oversees the departments operating budget.
Complete all administrative duties as assigned or requested including, but not limited to, HR paperwork, training, expense reporting, evaluations, exercises, and so forth.
Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education/
Experience:
Bachelor's degree with a major concentration in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, English or a related field.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) Relevant experience or training, which may be demonstrated via degree or certificate, completion of an apprenticeship, or other experience necessary to become trained as a highly-skilled communications professional Business background or experience preferred.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
